Lengthening can be achieved if pearls ended up never ever knotted.  Adding knots adds some duration--usually an inch or two on a necklace.  Strands may also be lengthened having an extender chain, by incorporating some scaled-down pearls near the clasp or by mixing in other kinds of beads.
